What wears a roof down
Sun, Wind and Shingles
In every neighborhood across town, a shingle roof wears from the top down: sun strips the granules off the surface and wind works at the seal that holds each tab flat.

"Granule loss" shows up as grit in the gutters and bald spots on the shingles, a sign the shingle is losing its protection from the sun. A broken "sealant bond", the factory seal between tabs, is what lets the wind lift a shingle, and it is hand-tested at the rakes and eaves.
Both are worth planning around. A broken seal or a few loose tabs is a small course-level fix; left until a storm tears them off, they become a leak and a bigger bill.
