Who you are calling

Cedar Shake Roofers in Littleton

At Mountain Range Roofing we work as cedar shake roofers for residential and commercial owners in Littleton and the towns around it, on houses and business buildings alike.

A shake roof rewards a careful hand. Scattered bad shakes come out one at a time without disturbing the sound ones, and when too much of the roof has gone, we say so plainly instead of patching what will not hold.

Call and tell us what you see from the yard: split shakes, curled edges, dark soft spots or green growth along a course. We pick up Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm, and calls outside those hours go to voicemail and get returned the next working morning.

The estimate costs nothing and carries no obligation.

What weather does to wood

How Wood Shake Roofs Wear

Wood shakes split, cup and rot as they weather, and dry rot can weaken the wood by half even when the damage looks minor.

  • Split

Sun and years of wetting and drying open the grain until a shake cracks through, and water runs into the gap beneath it.

  • Cupped

A shake that dries faster on top than underneath curls at its edges, lifts off the course below and lets wind-driven rain in.

  • Rotted

Where moss, needles or leaves hold moisture at the butts, the wood turns dark and soft. That is "dry rot", and it keeps working under shakes that still look whole.

From the ground, look for shakes sitting higher than their neighbors, pale fresh cracks and green growth on the lower edges. Those are the spots we check first.

How a shake repair goes

Replacing Split and Rotted Shakes

Split and rotted shakes are pulled out and new ones slipped in and fastened, and the underlayment is checked wherever the old ones failed.

  1. Walk and mark

We walk the roof and mark every shake that is split, cupped past saving or soft, so the quote names each one.

  2. Pull the failed shakes

Each bad shake is split out and its nails cut free, without prying up the sound shakes around it.

  3. Check the felt beneath

The "underlayment", the felt laid between courses, is looked at under every gap and patched where water got through.

  4. Slip in and fasten

A new shake slides up into the gap, spaced from its neighbors and nailed where the course above will hide the heads.

What sets the price

A shake repair is priced by how many shakes come out, the pitch and how hard the roof is to reach, and any rot found underneath. Fixing a problem now is usually cheaper than fixing it after the next storm, and the exact figure comes from a look at your roof.

When a shake roof is replaced

Composite Shake Alternatives

Composite tiles made to look like shake, from makers such as DaVinci and Brava, are an alternative when a wood shake roof is replaced.

Where we start

Keep the wood, swap the shakes

When the failures are scattered and the rest of the roof is sound, replacing only the bad shakes keeps the cedar look you already have.

  • Natural cedar stays. New shakes weather toward the color of the old ones.
  • Only what failed. Sound shakes stay where they are.
  • Felt checked at each gap. Water damage under a shake gets found, not covered.
At replacement time

Composite shake tile

A composite tile is molded to the shape and texture of a shake. It goes on when the whole roof is replaced, not one piece at a time.

  • No wood to fail. Nothing to split, cup or rot.
  • Other looks too. The same makers offer slate and clay styles.
  • A full roof job. Priced as a replacement, not a repair.

We walk the roof and tell you which of the two fits it, with the written quote in your hand.
