Climate and Roof Care
Summer here brings about 29.1 days a year of hard heat, and the sun works on an asphalt roof through every one of them.
Strong sun wears away the mineral grit that shields a shingle from UV, so "granule loss" shows up as grit in the gutters and bald patches on the slope. Heat also tests the factory seal between shingle tabs, and a tab that has let go lifts in the next wind.
With only about 17 inches of precipitation in a year, a small leak can sit quiet for weeks between storms and soak the deck again each time it rains. The time to have the roof looked at is right after a storm passes, before a stain finds its way indoors.
